The Everglades Challenge - An Insane Small-Boat Race Down Florida

Every year on the first Saturday in March, a diverse collection of kayaks, canoes, sailboats and catamarans gather on the beach at Fort DeSoto Park, just south of St. Petersburg on Tampa Bay. They are bound for Key Largo, some 300 miles away around the southern tip of Florida. The main goal of everyone entering the EC is simply to finish. Anyone who completes the course in eight days or less is entered into The Hall of Fame.

Historically, less than 30% of first time paddlers finish and that’s our goal, just finish. The record for our Division (paddle only) is 3 days, 6 hours and 30 minutes. We would like to finish in 5 days. If we finish in less than 5 days we will be in the top 30 all time. In less than 4 days and we will be in the top 10.

The race is supposed to start at 7:00ET on Saturday, March 6th, but right now small craft warnings are forecasted, which may mean either a delayed start or an alternative starting spot. We won’t know until Friday night.
